Do the anallitics have an explanation for how kahwi leonard a mid range scorer is the defending finals mvp?

They say you take at least 8 per game and zero mid ranges.

reality it just looks like you should take the high percentage shot as always.
But this thread is about the Spurs not taking many threes, with DeRozan not taking any.

I think analytics agree with you about taking the high percentage shot. The problem, as it’s been explained thousands of times, is that a long two is a low percentage shot versus a three. It’s not hard to understand why that is.

DeRozan has taken 122 shots from 16 feet to three point line this year. Kawhi has only taken 79. Why is DeRozan shooting there when he is only a 42% shooter from there? Kawhi actually shoots near 50% from there but he steps back and gets more points shooting threes.

Even Kawhi taking 5-6 three pointers a game shows that. If you have a midrange game that gets you good shots always, whats the problem?

He just doesn’t fit that system in San Antonio. He fit well in Toronto system up until his departure him. Maybe it’s pops system.

He didnt fit anymore with Toronto and thats why they moved on from him, that final season esp in the playoffs they saw the offense work better without him ballstopping it.

Well, for starters, the game isn't 1v1, so this condition that Kawhi won a Championship and Finals MVP last season is absent of the context that the Raptors aren't a mid-range team, you know all the other players on the team, as Kawhi wasn't out there by himself.

The Raptors, in the playoffs:

34 three-point attempts per game
13 midrange attempts per game

And since you want to bring up the Finals MVP as a measurement:

Kawhi, in the Finals:

Kawhi scored 7.5 points on 7 three-point shots per game - the equivalent of shooting 53% from midrange
Kawhi scored 3 points on 3.7 midrange shots per game - 41% from midrange
(far less efficient and points than his 3-pt shots)

Bu-bu-but Kawhi is a midrange scorer.

Oh look, a straw man argument cause you don't know what the fukk you're talking about. Now, where have I seen this before......

High percentages shots = behind the arc and inside the RA. Those are the only high percentage shots in the game, and you should structure your offense to prioritize getting those shots. That doesn't mean you shouldn't take any other sort of shot, it's just that those aforementioned shots should be what your offense is based around. Nearly every single team in the league understands and follows this method.

It's troubling that we're on the brink of 2020, and this still needs to be explained.

Lamarcus Aldridge is shooting more 3s lately.

DeRozan still won't shoot them in volume.

Of course he wont because his confidence is gone from taking them,I blame Pop for telling him to abandon it altogether. His last year in Toronto he shot 30% from 3 which isnt great but its not that far off from where LeBRon is...Pop shouldnt have taken it away. Its ok if shoots its open in the corner in rhythym, its forced ones you cant live with....But taking it off the table just flatlined his confidence, were talking about a guy whos already going thru mental health issues.

Its weird. DeRozan's shot mechanics is fine. He's a good shooter at midrange. The Spurs might have the best shooting coach in the NBA with Chip E.

I don't get why Pop didn't continue the trend from 2017-18 with DeRozan. Pop has really made puzzling coaching decisions since 2017.

I dont get him sometimes either...

But i think certain things he does is a template for future ideas he might have in mind...

Its a different type of coaching he has to do when it comes to younger/newer players...

As a fan i wished Lonnie Walker was in the rotation from day 1, but i guess he wants to stress certain things so he can firmly put bellineli out to pasture where he belongs...

If the off ball movement starts to come alive, we might have something:patrice:

What the Spurs need is a superstar. Just one. Get rid of DeRozan and you guys are back.

DeRozan felt a certain way about being traded, felt like it was his fault even if he didnt say it,and the one thing he was probably confident in after that season is his improving 3 point shooting,he might be a competent 3 point shooter finally and then he goes to a new team and they take it off the table...bad mental decision IMO.
