am I the only one that feels like sometimes he goes over the top with making himself sound metaphorical. he did it flawlessly on food and liquor and the cool but nowadays it seems like he tries a little to hard to make ideas more complex than they are. like a quote from einstein it takes a genius to make something complex sound simple. I like to decipher songs but not when it seems like the writer is intentionally trying to be cryptic for no reason. the political raps seem to be taking over more, i feel like the balance is being lost.

and since were already on the subject he doesnt sound very excited in alot of the songs on the last album. ex: cold war I really want lupe to do well but lets be honest about whats really going on. I know i cant be alone on this thinking and for those ready to pull out the capes save it for his album thread...

Even tough I like his album, I was already thinking this earlier today, just couldn't put it down in words like that, you called it man.. Don't mind niccas sheep mentality on this forum, I bet more breh's feel the same they're just scared for that neg rep :pachaha:

That's why I feel sometimes, triple, quadruple entandres and metaphors etc are overrated in Hip-Hop, the Genius about 'Pac for example was that he could say the realest shxt on wax and everybody got the messege, no rapgenius or 60 re-listens.

Im a huge Lupe fan but i have to agree. He just save his metaphorical stuff for a few songs and just rap on the rest. The Cool is a perfect example.

I been saying this for a minute. But it's only part of the problem - F&LII doesn't evoke emotion/feeling, nor does it sound believable, simply because Lupe doesn't have a commanding-enough voice/delivery to pull it off. He doesn't grab the listener. He certainly doesn't help his cause when his writing is over-bearing and lemme-spell-it-out-for-the-listener at times too. From a musical standpoint, it's ineffective, because it becomes a chore/bore to listen to, rather than an enjoyment. It's all about finding the balance.

There are very few socio-politic rappers that have found that balance, unfortunately for Lupe he's NO WHERE near that level at all, and probably never will be.

This is why pac will always be a better lyricist than lupe, even taking the whole posthumous-impact aspect into consideration as well.

Or maybe he's complex because he's always been a fantastic lyricist? What does the guy have to do to please you? Oh so he made a complex song and now he's trying too hard? But he wasn't trying too hard when he made songs like Lupe the killer though right? So he wasn't cryptic with songs like American Terrorist though right? To say you're not a Lupe fan because of his antics is understandable, I'll admit you either love him or hate him for that. But to attack his lyrical ability, rapping ability and/or both AND then say he's trying too hard has to be the most ridiculous statement I've seen on here in recent times.

It's called being Poetic. There's no measure to how you do that.

From a lyrics/writing view - Pac can paint a better picture, write better songs, more versatile, better hooks, better existentialist songs, better socio-politic songs, songs that have stood the test of time, songs that are universal, songs that reach different cultures, better poems etc etc

I'm just waiting for a muh'fukka to come in here and say - "but pac doesn't do double entendre(s) like lupe, he doesn't use alliteration, metaphors, similes like lupe does"......

I currently have F&L2 as my album of the year, slightly edging out LIG, but I said this in the official album thread:

But the bigger problem for me is the concept of the album in general. Food and Liquor was about the balance between good (Food) and Evil (Liquor). This album doesn't have that balance imo. Lu just seems set on focusing on the Liquor. As wonderful and lyrically amazing as tracks like Strange Fruition, Audobon Ballroom, etc are, I think Hood Now might be my favorite track right now just because of its contrast to the rest of the album. It's not Lu carrying a cross for a cause or speaking on the ills of the world but a witty, heartfelt track that actually had me smiling and legit laughing at parts. Lu let his guard down and wasn't trying to prove anything on that track. I'll reserve judgement about him not living up to the concept of Food and Liquor until I hear Pt. 2 since maybe it'll be the opposite of this. But F&L was so great cause you'd have your He Say She Say, The Cool, Hurt Me Soul, American Terrorist but then Kick Push, Sunshine, Just Might Be OK to balance it and live up to the concept of the album. F&L had more heart and emotion. F&L2 was American Terrorist 10 times. I love American Terrorist but it eventually gets too heavy to be bombarded by the ills of the world track after track. Lu was like Immortal Technique but with talent on this album.

Immortal technique has talent.
On topic : I liked the album but some songs
had very clumsy lyricism which almost felt
filler.
B*tch bad suffered from that,on top of the terrible
part of the song where he imitates the mother.
Lamborghini Angels suffered from that in the third verse.
Im certain there are other songs I can pull up.
