What specifically is the bitcoin halving??? I've seen this phrase pop up and still like

every leap year the amount of bitcoin that can be mined/created decreases by half…so many many many many many years from now there will be a finite supply of bitcoin…I forgot exactly when the last halvening will be but we’ll all be dead by then…I think it’s like 2140 or some shyt…anyway it’s happened 3 times already and each time there were huge alt runs the following year…the halving/halvening is definitely happening in 2024 and I’m just hoping/speculating that the alt “pattern” will continue the following year

Every 210k blocks, about every 4 years, the reward for mining a bitcoin block is halved. Current block reward is 6.25btc. Mining a block is essentially processing transactions and validating them.
