He had to stay clean with proof for a year before they even considered putting him on the list.

The list of individuals waiting for a kidney transplant is extensive. There is a pecking order. Hospitals/surgeons base the decision to provide a kidney on many factors: age, sex, severity of disease, other illnesses, probable success during and after the surgery. Reason I asked is because I’ll never forget Mickey Mantle received a kidney when he was diagnosed with some type of cancer after years of being an alcoholic. I remember this vividly because around the same time, Walter Payton also was sick and needed a transplant, but they couldn’t find a donor.
