"Corey Griffin, one of the creators of the "ALS Ice Bucket Challenge," died over the weekend at age 27.

Griffin helped co-found the viral craze that involves being doused with ice water to help raise donations to fight amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's Disease, after his friend Pete Frates was diagnosed with it, according to the Boston Globe.

Griffin accidentally drowned after diving from a building located on Straight Wharf into the water off the coast of Nantucket, Mass. around 2 a.m.

Frates broke the news on his Facebook page, writing:

"Team FrateTrain lost a good friend today, Corey Griffin. Helping out was nothing new for Griff. He held his own event for me back in 2012, just a few months after diagnosis. He worked his butt off these last few weeks for ALS. We texted everyday, planning and scheming ways to raise funds and plan events."

According to reports, Griffin raised $100,000 at an ALS fundraiser just hours before he died.
