It looks like he crashed the ice cream truck into the wall. The wall is damaged and the hood is seriously caved in even before they show up with the bat.

He did something to aggrivate them. The robbery was just cause the cash was there. Them smashing the windows and attacking him when they already had access to the cash is for personal reasons.
