I've been listening to all the old Drake, for fall, and he really had a classic run from 2009-2013-2015. So Far Gone, Take Care, and Nothing Was The Same. I liked those albums in real time a lot, but they are even better now.

When you judge music and era's a decade or so later, you have more clarity. I like it more than I did back then. The production is flawless, the lyrics and the song concepts defined a whole generation in that era, I know it did for me, the era of ambition and relationship bars.

I've listened to everything since, and it's not as good. There's always dope tracks here and there. Some of this is just the end of an era, the label overreach. But, the albums got bloated, and he has been circling the same content for like 8 years now. It doesn't feel innovative, it feels like stagnation. Doesn't have the crispness or the insights he once had. Some of that is just age, he got older, and a whole generation that came up tp his music got older too. Most of this new shyt doesn't even interest me. But the way we even consume music now has changed. All the drama. All the social media shyt. I don't even recognize this anymore.

This guy has now had multiple moments where he has blasted out "insider" information that was patently false. His entire name is built off Drake dikk riding now, but it's clear he doesn't even like the music. He likes the drama and is invested in a battle that ended over a year ago. So when Drake drops a bunch of ladies tracks or does some shyt talking - IE virtually every Iceman track released so far - this weirdo is conditioning fans not to care because they ONLY want a diss. Or a conspiracy track. This is fanbase poison.

Like a lot of big artists, he went from telling personal stories that reached a lot of people, he connected with a lot people, to becoming kind of trapped in his own reflection. And of course, some of that was planned and strategized, I'd argue Drake was one of the first social media artists, like his music was refracted through social media, before it became the norm. Remember all the lines that were hastags or IG captions or whatever around 2013/2011. It felt authentic though.

So, he went from that, to this new kind of narrative form, which is almost always centered on the self. He has no idea what fans want to hear anymore, or how to speak to his fan base, the 35-40 year olds who grew up on his music. He's been coasting for awhile now. Drake used to speak to a generation, and now he speaks really for a more narrow and narrow lane, which is like the newer fans, who are there just because he's a name.

He's been in the game for 20 yrs, I'm sure he's said anything personal he had to say. I think he realized this a long time ago and thats when the wave/sound hopping began. But a few years later now it seems like he ran out of things to pivot to so he's stuck recycling :manny:

Yeah, like any stories, TV, movies, music, they have a beginning/middle/end, and like a TV show that goes on too long, they lose the urgency, start repeating themselves, circle the same topics, the same formula. He's also like any of the artists of his time frame, victim to time. The game has changed. You need longer albums. More social media engagement. More fan acknowledgement. Whatever this influencer shyt is. These weird roll outs. A lot has changed from 2011. He's also a huge huge financial industry in himself. Supports probably dozens of people, if not more at the label.

I think Jay and Nas managed to do it, to a degree. Some of the transitions weren't smooth, Kingdom Come, and Hip Hop Is Dead, but they managed to make it to the other side, but also they lost their A list status. They lost the streets. They actually gave those things up to become what they are now. Drake is still circling and circling. The Weeknd is experiencing this too, but he seems like he's ready to stop for awhile, bow out gracefully.

The rollout/music/"red button" tease feels as if he was under the impression that this UMG stuff would've been settled by now and he would be free. That hasn't happened, at least not yet and he's stuck in purgatory. Doesn't feel concrete.
