An essay for those in the humanities, maybe something where community service plays a factor into it? My dumb ass tried this in TLR and barely got participation. Wishing y'all the best on this endeavor and let me know how i can help.

edit- maybe help someone looking for an unpaid summer internship?

The god @blazn101 wants to give back & help out students of The Coli by sponsoring a competitive contest. :wow: He's putting up $150 in cash prizes & some Coli gear for the winners.

Any ideas on a contest? Drop some below :salute:
The easiest is a good 'ol fashioned essay contest (most accessible as opposed to a business plan) about the coli/social media and how it has helped them as a student. Have a panel of people judge for (content, style, grammar, etc). Make it something they'd be willing to let the mods share or tweet out (obviously remove their name or bleep out identifiers). It's what I would do. Make them do student shyt to earn it. Every single college student student is supposed to know how to write an essay.

I'd argue that the paper topic should be related to their discipline and written as if it was a submission to an academic journal. That way they can use it as a writing sample and it won't be tied to some of the negativity that can be associated with The Coli.

That would take up too much time. And if it's not going to be attached to anything but their screen name, I don't see the damage. You basically just asked for a paper that is between 25 and 45 pages.

What sort of time frame are you thinking of? We all have stuff to do and it's not like we can drop it to work on this challenge. Working on and off it may take you 6-8 weeks to finish a solid submission. Unless @blazn101 says otherwise, there's no rush.

You've been on The Coli long enough to know that all it takes is some butthurt fool in TLR to think you've slighted them and they'll try to expose you. Young professionals, especially black young professionals, don't need to be dealing with that type of shyt. It's all fun and games until it hits close to home - just look at the situation with JudeJoeGorilla and the pictures of his mom.

I asked for the participants to 1) Challenge themselves to write for academia 2) Create something portfolio worthy. The paper doesn't have to be that long if they don't want it to be. It needs to be long enough to effectively communicate their point; if it takes them 25-45 pages to do that then that's their prerogative. At the least they could write a 5-10 page paper, decide they want to explore that topic further, then put in the research and submit it to a legitimate journal. How many Coli brehs/brehettes are published? 10, 15 of us (yeah, humblebrag)? This could be the first steps for some people.

To concede to your original post, people can still do the social media topic, but it should go above and beyond an English 101 type of paper. That's my thing, make this contest applicable outside of The Coli.

Look, I moderated HL for 4.5 years and helped create the original version of this forum (colleges and careers), trust me when I tell you that you're asking for too much and being unrealistic. People have lives and primarily use theColi for leisure. Your plan is ambitious, but unrealistic and honestly, entirely unnecessary. You're asking for a standard that exceeds 98% of scholarship competitions at almost every level. To be honest, it almost seems like you have something in the stash and you know that you'll have the advantage (lol ). If I still modded here, I'd seriously look down on something that would discourage a level playing field. If someone is an engineer, how in the world do you expect them to switch up entirely and dedicate two months to your endeavor? Few have the time (and many who do, won't dedicate it. Even what I said may be too ambitious). Would it be fair to expect an English major to come up with a business plan the way engineers and b-school students might? Would it be fair to ask an engineer to write an advanced psychology or philosophy paper? No. But this way, everyone can use their disciplines and decipher what the topic means to them and their academic career in their own way. The essay is just a format, what you choose to write about can cover any field of study. Think about how one could talk about the coli, social media and philosophy, psychology, business, sociology, politics, linguistics, race, gender, business, etc.?

Last, why in the world would anyone do this strictly for the coli for $150.00 dollars when the prize money anywhere else for that type of effort would be much greater? To me it's simple: 10 pages max, give them the subject, allow them to maintain anonymity so that everyone can participate and let the best person win. It's on the homie @Brooklynzson

You must have missed my earlier post in the thread where I said different disciplines should be doing different challenges. I mentioned that to keep a level playing field. My first reply to you pertained specifically to writing a paper. I think we're arguing towards the same point and just don't realize it yet.

I understand my plan is ambitious, but then again, if we're really trying to be 6 cert, 6 figure, 6 foot tall dudes then we should be pushing our abilities. Anything I come up with for this competition would be entirely from scratch, otherwise what's the point? The money is nice and all, but that's not my reason for participating :manny: .
