Of course the ATL
Got hooked on football during the last World Cup. shyt is piff. I haven't watched enough football to think I could make effective rules changes to the game, but I will say that the suggestions the OP made are all consistently terrible.

Even in the first "counter attack" in the clip, you can see how the wing players are just slow jogging because they are waiting for the person with the ball to catch up so they are not offsides. To me, it's the equivalent of wide receivers waiting for the quarterback to throw before going deep, or the basketball equivalent of waiting for the player dribbling to cross half court before crashing towards the basket. You are taking away the alley oop, the long bomb, you are taking away exciting plays. Especially that the pitch in soccer is so large, I think it would make for a much more exciting game.

Watching this Italy-England game, there's definitely some ways the game could improve in my humble opinion:

1) the biggest thing I see, is that player speed is negated by offsides. Especially Balotelli, a lot of times I saw he wanted to bust open, but he just stood around waiting for the players to get back. I think that you shouldn't allow players to just "cherrypick", by cherrypick I mean just hanging out in front of the other team's goal, but once the ball changes possession, players should be allowed to run. It would allow a "fast break" ala basketball, and open up the game a bit more I think.
No, player speed is the ability to blow PAST the defender, if offsides was abolished then players like Messi and the sort would have no type of impediment. You wouldn't abolish offsides in Hockey would you?

2) Some physicality should be allowed. I think it would be cool if you could lead with the shoulders when trying to take someone off the ball.
Yeah, im not sure if you are serious or not...the only time fouls are called is when there is contact and no play on the ball...Soccer is one of the most full-contact sports there is breh...pay attention. If you wanna watch a sport where its called "full contact" but its BS watch the NBA. Its been totally pussified post jordan.

3) It would be cool if the penalty kicks were one on one defensive player vs offensive player, as opposed to just kicking it. It's almost an 80% chance the penalty goes in, I think if the offensive player had to beat a defensive player one on one, it would be more interesting.

Just no...PK are one of the most mentally taxing things in sports, and up there in terms of suspence just like the game winning field goal. Again, some NFL teams play for the field goal win and not the TD. Same when a team play for penalties like england tried to today. The Best keepers in the world i.e. Buffon or Spain's Iker Casillas have all saved VITAL PK's

Just a few thoughts from Yankee, let me know your opinions.

Again answers in bold....i think all of these are bad suggestions but again i would say just plain ole watch more soccer and you will understand why its played the way it is....

i mean imagine Ronaldo with NO offsides :whoo:

only thing i say is have the goal line technology or at least have replay from the booth

Daps for your post. The bolded is my point exactly, the rules limit a player's athleticism. Could you imagine the Miami Heat or the LA Clippers if the fast break wasn't allowed in the NBA? You would have more scoring, and more exciting plays.

BTW, I see fouls called all the time on plays on the ball where there's minimal contact, don't know what you're talking about.

I feel you on the PK situation, but it's RARE for a goalie to be able to stop a PK. it's just as much chance as it is skill.

word word, i see your comparisons here. Its like you envison for soccer some kind of football/hockey hybrid. The contact is there, and while there is a diving problem in soccer the contact is really there alot especially during Corner Kicks.

And as far as the offsides issue is...you have to remember football starts from a mutual, static possition. people are always moving in soccer. So no offsides would be the equivalent of WR being able to take off before the snap...now imagine that...you would negate the talents of vertical WR like Calvin Johnson because only little Devin Hesters would be WR cuz they could burn all the DB's with this new head start they can get. Thats why you have small finesse strikers like Messi to get past the defender...OR you can get big Strong strikers that can fend off the defenders like Zlatan Ibrohimavic or Didier Drogba.

Daps for your response, and I feel what you're saying. That's why I said when the ball changes possession. If you see a player from your squad steal the ball, you should be able to break to the opposing goal at full speed. I am saying only when the ball changes possession. At the bare minimum, at least when you're outside of the penalty box. I think it would make for much more beautiful soccer. You would have soccer "alley oops", and score would be up to about 10-15 goals per game. I think I might start a league just to show people. If soccer was more free-flowing, and a little more physical, I think it would be an incredible game. More accurate to me would be a basketball/hockey hybrid, not football/hockey. To me basketball is the "hands" version of soccer, it's free flowing, there's no stoppage other than timeout (I don't consider taking the ball out of bounds stoppage), and you need accuracy in order to score. If basketball had offsides, it would literally suck. It sucks a little bit now because you can't hand check and be as physical as you could back in the day. But if basketball had offsides, it would be the equivalent of the Spurs vs Celtics every day :scusthov: Some concessions on offsides at a minimum would make it the best game

Only changes that need to be made:

1. Video review for if it is unclear if the ball crossed the goal line

2. Suspensions/Fines for players who continuously dive and fake injuries

Blackzeus in early contention for 2012's Worst Coli Poster :myman:

You the same nikka that would have been complaining that the forward pass is sacrilege back in the day, and anybody for it should be burned at the stake. Why would you limit excitement/fast action in a game. Let 'em play baby, let 'em play. :smugdraper:

already too many sports and too much work to have another sport come into near everyday life for a season. we are already too bothered by instant replay and shyt adding minutes to our sports. its a shame cuz soccer is exciting, but watching the world cup is pretty satisfying enough

I'd much rather watch soccer than baseball in the summer while waiting for the NFL to start
