Well over 90 percent of enslaved Africans were imported into the Caribbean and South America. Only about 6 percent of African captives were sent directly to British North America. Yet by 1825, the US had a quarter of blacks in the New World

I had to look this up because I was a bit skeptical about him saying more Slaves were brought to the Caribbean than the US. Seems like theres some truth to this.

:dwillhuh: thats common knowledge

Not to me it wasnt :manny:

I knew more slaves were sent to Brazil but I didn't think the discrepancy was that big since America is huge. I would never guess just 6% of Slaves that went to Americas went to the US. Tbh, I still kinda find it hard to believe. It's also hard to believe how fast American slaves reproduced!

Actually that is very true. Very few slaves were actually bought to the USA (about 4% or 5% of the total) in comparison to the Caribbean and Central and South America. Some of it had to do with North America having an overall colder climate and shorter growing seasons. So American slave owners did not work their slaves to death like the slave owners did in the Caribbean and in Central and South America. So African Americans ended up having higher birth rates and low mortality rates; AA's ended up being the second largest group of Africans in the Americas behind the Brazilians. So USA slave owners did not need to import anymore slaves, because the slaves were very reproductive.

slavery and Atlantic slave trade facts and figures.

The down side was that by the time of the Civil War, African Americans were further removed from their African Roots; so a typical slave in the USA was a 5th or 6th generation descendant of Africans. That is why very few African Americans knew anything about Africa. That is why people (Black and White) are surprised to now learn that many of the slaves brought to the USA were Muslim, which stands to reason since so many of them were Mandingo people.
