Personally I would say Resurrection. Both have that jazzy lo-fi vibe and peak level lyricism. Two of the greatest lyrical albums of all time. Also two of the greatest produced albums of all time. Word life is a great album but never really placed it on that all time level.

Word...Life is one of my favorite albums of all-time.

It's right up there with Illmatic for me, just didn't have the push that it deserved, back in the day. But it's one of those classics that I never stopped playing since it dropped. Front to back, it's really a flawless project.

:ohlawd:

Same here, bruh

Facts

I listen to it daily and just zone out :wow:

I do think the record execs were trying to capture Illmatic vibes with the marketing of Word Life (also Big L's first lp to some extent, and obviously Big's album)

But if we're talking about the essence of Illmatic..

I'd go with Soul on Ice...but the stuff that didn't make the official Priority Records release, the stuff that was on Patchwerk.
  • Very lyrical
  • Very visual
  • Very personal and vulnerable

I would say Reasonable Doubt. I think Jay was directly influenced.

Word Life definitely has a similar aesthetic and vibe too.

Mic Geronimo probably had the most blatant Nas-style push

Word... Life would have been a smash if it dropped before Illmatic. I think OC would have had a lot of mileage if he dropped in '92 after the Fudge Pudge verse. I listen to Word... Life and Illmatic for different reasons. Word... Life had a more soulful approach, not as lyrical as Illmatic but a lowkey complement to Illmatic's vibe. Word... Life is definitely a cousin, I think Illmatic, Word... Life, and The Sun Rises in the East were three of a kind in '94. Nas's lyricism was too polished, that spark of genius was a once-in-a-generation talent. Word... Life feel like an older cousin.
