Personally I would say Resurrection. Both have that jazzy lo-fi vibe and peak level lyricism. Two of the greatest lyrical albums of all time. Also two of the greatest produced albums of all time. Word life is a great album but never really placed it on that all time level.

To me Illmatic, Resurrection and Soul On Ice are all the same concept of album but from different regions.

Word... Life would have been a smash if it dropped before Illmatic. I think OC would have had a lot of mileage if he dropped in '92 after the Fudge Pudge verse. I listen to Word... Life and Illmatic for different reasons. Word... Life had a more soulful approach, not as lyrical as Illmatic but a lowkey complement to Illmatic's vibe. Word... Life is definitely a cousin, I think Illmatic, Word... Life, and The Sun Rises in the East were three of a kind in '94. Nas's lyricism was too polished, that spark of genius was a once-in-a-generation talent. Word... Life feel like an older cousin.

The "Fudge Pudge" verse was what made me a fan, back then.

Problem was, he was on Wild Pitch. So no matter how dope the album was gonna be, he wasn't gonna be pushed properly. Lord Finesse and mad other MC's went through the same thing with them. They just didn't know what to do with Hip Hop albums.

O type starr.
Also was caught up in this.

Anyway.

If krs would do his job.
Krs asked for.

I would go to bat for the real precursor to illmatic.
Yet since krs souled out all of hiphop. At the basic core mores and norms.

fukk it.
