He would probably be put more so in the Griselda/Indie Rap box than a mainstream rap box.
It'd be heavily revered in the hip hop world and might even be nominated for a Grammy but it would be overlooked by mainstream rap fans.

Nas would probably be Benny The Butcher/Dave East status if he were to drop Illmatic in todays climate.
Not saying it’s a bad thing because he would still gather a sizable fan base but it wouldn’t be enough to break into mainstream.
