Until J Cole develops a personality.... he's gonna be a 2nd tier rapper.

I disagree. The only people I know who dont like Cole are hood nikkas who think Gucci Mane is the best rapper alive. College level/working class black people like Cole, white people like cole and most importantly, females like Cole. His female hits like workout and power trip has given him a big female audience. Maybe the Bay Area has a different culture than where yall are from but most people I know (21-25) know who J Cole is and like his music for the most part.

can we OFFICIALLY claim he's an A-list MC???

He's BEEN A-liat. the man is signed to Roc Nation, released two of the most highly regarded Mixtapes of the new generation of MC's, has had a single peek in the top 20 of billboard, and already has RELEASED a number one charting, Gold selling album. OF COURSE he's an A- list MC, that's not even up for debate...

now if your asking is he a "Superstar" then no. There are currently only Four superstar rappers in the game

Drake
Jay-Z
Eminem
Kanye West

But that doesn't make Cole any less of an A-list MC as it does Rick Ross, Nas, or Kendrick Lamar

i'm saying.. it's like an enigma to me. j. cole isn't someone that plaster himself with thousand of guest appearances. don't be on gossip circles non-stop. don't have any gimmicks on shenanigans. not controversial. don't be all in the spotlight. but yet he can somehow just DROPS an LP and EVERYONE goes out to check it out. and people be bugged on how he be getting these numbers. his fanbase for whutever reasons is huge and dedicated.

It's just like Nas and Kendrick Lamar. They don't whore themselves out and feed the gossip circuits but their fanbases are loyal and DEDICATED which is more valuable to a long lasting career

Cole could probably be a "star" if he had a personality, did more features, and actually was a member of the hip hop community for a change. Everything about him seems isolated. He's not out there finding producers, he's not chopping it up with big time producers, he rarely does interviews or gets publicity at sports events, etc. He releases an album, tours a couple months, then disappears.

I didn't expect this album to sell like this, and it seems like his fans are digging it (even if I think it's just aite). Maybe, just maybe, the upper eschalon is right there for the taking...if he wants it. But when I listen to Crooked Smile and Let Nas Down it sounds like he doesn't want to change who he is to make that next step.
