Yeah.
Until J Cole develops a personality.... he's gonna be a 2nd tier rapper.

Cole could probably be a "star" if he had a personality, did more features, and actually was a member of the hip hop community for a change. Everything about him seems isolated. He's not out there finding producers, he's not chopping it up with big time producers, he rarely does interviews or gets publicity at sports events, etc. He releases an album, tours a couple months, then disappears.
I didn't expect this album to sell like this, and it seems like his fans are digging it (even if I think it's just aite). Maybe, just maybe, the upper eschalon is right there for the taking...if he wants it. But when I listen to Crooked Smile and Let Nas Down it sounds like he doesn't want to change who he is to make that next step.
that's the thing thou... you got someone like RICK ROSS, they have never and probably WILL NEVER see the numbers j. cole be getting just off the fly. and rick ross be on all sorts of features, have all tabloid shiit popping off, and ect... have big time producers on his album and everything...
and j. cole IS the most isolated rapper since, and i hate to use the comparison (to clarify i am NOT comparing skillset) RAKIM... because rakim back in HIS prime was very isolated. yet, this WORKS better than whut the REST of these rappers are doing.
excluding decades old veterans like jay-z, nas, and lil wayne... the only OTHER rappers doing it bigger is drake & nicki and just as of right now kendrick... out of a GANG of those "other" rappers....
The Rakim comparison is perfect. LL, Kane, all them dudes were often seen with each other, in the spotlight, etc; even KRS was "out there" at one point. Rakim kept to his self and focused on the music.
You right about Ross and others who plaster themselves everywhere yet can't get these numbers. Imagine if Cole was everywhere like that, working with Timbaland and T-Minus and all them dudes, dating celebs. He just might manage to do Drake numbers and really dominate the culture; when Drake puts out a song, it shoots to the top whereas Cole's stuff takes its time. He could have this shyt on lock if he wanted, if he accepted the help. I don't even think he needs to dumb his shyt down. IMO he needs to smarten it up cuz some of his lyrics are straight up simple as hell.
this week he's projected to be at the top. not by much mind you.. but the consistency of him selling is amazing. typically it would of dropped...
J. Coles Born Sinner On Pace To Reach #1 On Album Chart | AllHipHop.com
i'm saying.. it's like an enigma to me. j. cole isn't someone that plaster himself with thousand of guest appearances. don't be on gossip circles non-stop. don't have any gimmicks on shenanigans. not controversial. don't be all in the spotlight. but yet he can somehow just DROPS an LP and EVERYONE goes out to check it out. and people be bugged on how he be getting these numbers. his fanbase for whutever reasons is huge and dedicated.
He's not a household name.
But that's what's dope about this album's success. Sometimes you don't need all of that. Just drop some dope music and let the people speak. I dig how folks came out to support the dude. Having a "name" doesn't always translate into your following coming out to support. Hip Hop has had an incredible few weeks of showing that people will support you if you drop quality content. Just peep how people are supportin' that Wale joint.
