They were actually pretty smart..they had bigger brains than modern humans..they did amazing cave paintings ..knew how to make fire..they just got pushed back and isolated and died off..humans survived cuz humans knew how to form groups and communicate with each other, where as Neanderthals didn't move in group formation so they got attacked easily and pushed back onto the coast..
