States will start to secede. I especially see California saying "nah. We out" it will be the end of the union. Southern states already basically want to function as completely independent countries. It's not a stretch to see the United States as we know it dissolving. I can see NY and Cali trying to merge with Canada if not just deciding they're independent and leaving. If Trump tries to force them to be part of the union through military action, I can see the European Union funding them to fight back and resist Ukraine style.

I think it's more likely that they'd be independent, establish trade deals with Canada and if they were attacked, Canada would back them up. But I'm not going to rule out the possibility of them merging especially if Trump leaves NATO because he's already said America spends too much on it. If the United States breaks up as a country then by default we aren't in NATO anyway. Canada is still a NATO member though and a free state merging with Canada may be a way to guarantee that if they're attacked, Europe and Canada would have to step in since an attack on any nato country is treated as an attack on all of them.

It would be serious ether to the Democratic party for a long time if he won in 2024. There would be a huge internal fight between moderates, liberals and progressives over the direction of the party and it would damage them in the 2028 election too.
