If the NBA Cap is $58M, how can u realistically stay under it?

I just got an ESPN alert to my phone saying the NBA cap is staying at $58M or so. well thats fine, but when u got the MLE, which is sposed to be the average salary at over $5M, even if u had 12 cats on the team making average money, you'd still be over the cap. why is the NBA cap so retarded tho? its basically made so u have to exceed it just to field a competitive team. that is unless ur team sucks for years on end, and u keep making great pick after great pick early in the lottery. and we saw that work for the thunder, but the cap is about to come crush the buildings on them as well as they approach lux tax status once harden and ibaka have to get paid.

also, it helps the small market teams in a financial sense because the added penalties of the luxury tax incurred by teams that go over the salary cap gets evenly distributed to the owners of all 30 teams, so it indirectly promotes parity

you can't spend cheaply on an NBA contender. Impossible to do. The best teams usually spend lux tax money to win. Nothing has changed.

All a higher cap would do is have a guy like Omer Asik maxed out instead of getting $8 mil per

some folks will accept that lux tax, but contracts overall prices will come down. it'll hurt those second and third tier guys the most, as they'll have to accept what's left after the stars have been paid top dollar.

the interesting thing that will happen if someone is smart enough to avoid locking in to long high contracts over the next 2-3 years, there will be a free agent class with a lot of quality that will be able to be had for relatively cheap. you could easily get a team with memphis or indy's talent level and be in great cap shape, and if you luck up in that time and draft a legit star, that'll be some NFL type turn around shyt.

The value on rookie deals, veteran deals, etc. make fielding a competitive team under the cap improbable but possible. But I think you can def stay under the luxury tax and field a championship squad.

@Woo, do you think upper 2nd tier guys leaving money on the table also hurt in the long run? I can see cheap ass owners willing to either keep the cap at this amount or even suggesting to lower it some more because those guys are willing to leave that $$ on the table and try to protect themselves (yea right) from overpaying lower 2nd-3rd tier guys?

You really can't if you are trying to win. Only way a team can be under the cap and competitive is if they have a bunch of young guys on their rookie deals playing at a high level (OKC, CHI).
