I actually feel bad for dogs who have owners that let them stay in cages for long periods of time, and this place looks really dirty.

That cage is too small for the dog.

We keep our dog fenced in the kitchen so it has room to roam. Of course the dog is an 18-lb Chihuahua/Schnauzer so it can't really do any damage (climbing on counters etc.)

Bigger cage, better cage plus a LOT of exercise. Tie that dog to you and your bike and make his azz run until he wants to tap out. Dogs need work, especially bigger dogs like that.
