Because prior to the civil rights movement, white nationalisms was not only tolerated, it was legislated. Post Civil Rights, being an openly racist person of power became frowned upon. But this seems to be the great awakening for white folks. I agree, all the neo Nazi groups, militias, etc have been trying to make that transition for a while. Many have gone the "clean-cut" route.
