Try balancing yourself on a ladder, 3 stories up, 70 lbs of gear on you with fire blowing out of the windows below you. Not to mention, it’s 90 degrees & humid outside.

I’ve seen guys who run marathons and long distance swimming fold in those conditions. The job is tough and no joke, everyday I get home off shift I thank God I got home safe

Putting up ladders, busting out walls, Climbing up flights of stairs with 70 lbs of gear. Maneuvering a hose line with enough pressure to put 230 lb men on they ass(I’ve seen it).

It’s scary but you rely on your crew & training.

I’ve helped carry a family out of a burning duplex and delivered babies, most rewarding feeling of My life

Nationally, it’s the same. It’s called the CPAT.

You gotta walk on a stair master for 4 minutes, drag an adult dummy, search & rescue maze, hose deployment, Carry heavy tools among other things. All while wearing a 50 lb vest.

Easy, I walked thru most of the course and I still finished with like a minute left.

But like I said previously, that is pale in comparison to what you do at an actual building fire.

Unfortunately, once you graduate the fire academy you’re no longer forced to keep up with your physical fitness. I work with dudes who are north of 350lbs with gear on. You think you pulling them down from a 3rd floor apartment if shyt hits the fan?
