I don't think he told him he wasn't coming back. I think it was the fact that he didn't fully commit to coming back. he was going to test free agency.

Honestly the dynamic faded once Harden left. The core was slowly decaying. They tried to sign and trade different parts but it didn't pan out. Then the traded for Perkins which probably set them back.

Both Westbrook and Durant grew and much as they could playing together. It's probably why Durant put so much stock into winning it all this year.
