We are not white people and should stop comparing our "progress" to theirs. I know every stat in America loves to compare races but the truth is, there is no comparison. We aren't running the same race, imo.

I try to use the resources available to me in the smartest way possible. Yes, I know that Suzy Q white girl is probably doing the same job as I am and making 5-10k more but I can only work with the resources that I have, not what I could have if I were Suzy Q.

I agree. I was just explaining why it's tough for blacks to build generational wealth.

i try not to dog my race on here cuz yall do that enough
but i peeped that black parents love tellin they kids once you 18 you grown
or you out the house

to me thats foul, if you a decent kid you should be always be able to lay your head at your parents house

esp the females, if i had a daughter she can live wit me as long as she want as long as she doing something productive

black people love treatin they kids like little grownups

even when they lil babies. thinkin shyt be cute when it aint

A lot of these broke heads be having kids all young n shyt, when they don't have the patience or tolerance to raise kids of their own. They think that they MUST have kids before 23 cause of church/ peers/ moms said so. Then their kids just grow up wild as shyt cause they always working and the kids not making any skills for the future. Which make the kids turn 18 and out their on their own cause mama wants to get her groove on again and the kids are left without a place to live and debt that be around them for the rest of their lives.

In today's society where a 4 year degree is $50,000 plus? ..fukk no they aren't failures for not paying for their child's education. Like others have said, saving up $10K is good enough IMO. My parents didn't pay for my college education because they couldn't afford it. I worked and saved up and was done with my college loans within 6 years after graduating. But then again, I graduated college in 2005..my total loan was only $18K. College cost are probably triple that nowadays.

I wish more nikkas (black men) would embrace this mentality. We are quick to blame the white men or the white corporate overlords for our faillures but truth is we know the odds are stack against us at birth, and no amount of blame shifting is going to solve our dilemma. So question comes to what are we going to do about it besides complaining and giving up.

That is a lesson I wished I learn while in High school.

Looking back do you think you could have paid off your loans in less than 6 years?

My family has been middle class for enough generations & I value edu highly enough that YES, I will severely disappoint myself if I offer only pocket lint at tuition payment time.

The generational wealth problem with African Americans is a whole different story. Whites have had 500 years plus ideal conditions to build their wealth. Blacks have had less than 100 years and horrible conditions in which to build wealth. It makes logical sense that we would be behind.

Real scenario. Black family becomes educated, makes a good living, moves out the hood. There's is no help above them, and they are the help to all those below them. When it comes time to buy a house, they pay more in intrest and loan fees, while still supporting their family that hasn't made it out the hood. It comes time to pay for college, but the parents don't have much cash to throw at it because they are still paying for their own school loans, plus home loans, plus they are still paying off grandmas house. So their kids take out loans of their own and the cycle continues.

On the other hand a white family has support from above. They go to school get the same degree make the same amount of money as the black family, but instead of paying for grandmas house, grandma gives them a house, and mom payed for their schooling, so when it's time to put their kids through school the parents have both the cash and credit to afford it. Grandma sends money for books and living expenses, the kid goes to school without taking out any loans, credit cards, etc, and when he grows up he passes those benefits to his kid.

This is the current dynamic in America and in my opinion only time will fix it. We have been on a constant rise since we were freed as slaves, and we just have to continue at it.

You keep bringing up this 5- 10k number, but what proof do you have that parents aren't spending that much or more on their kids education?

I'd say that most parents probably spend more than that regardless if the kids get loans/grants.

Heading out to lunch brb

I'm a female, but I think it would be beneficial for all black people to adopt this mentality. It just makes life easier instead of constantly comparing yourself to someone that has had an advantage since before you were born.

sigh.. I cant call it

Generally college is a two income thing. (normally mom and dad)

sadly, the state of the black family structure is so torn that most kids are in single income households.

Do I think any parent is a failure tho?? naw...
if a parent got their kid to even see 18yrs without death or prison, you've succeeded

By the way, who said it's the parents' responsibility to pay for your post-secondary schooling? A) You're legally an adult B) It shouldn't be expected for parents to pay anyways. Are you going to expect them to still pay for your shyt and you want to be treated like an adult? :childplease:

it is the parents responsibilty. lol@18 being an adult.

now for me as a parent who is thinking about my sons future now( age 8 ). im gearing him towards getting scholarships for college. hence teaching him computer programming and algebra now. the lazy parents can wait til their kid turn 18 and ask them what they want to do in life. not me, and yes my parents didnt save a dime and they had the money.

NO. That's why they have things called financial aid, part-time jobs loans and scholarships. If you get the grades you can get money. Cant expect parents to pay for school especially in this economy.
