Hmmm...I was reading your post and I was actually going to suggest that.i actually used to do this alot in my undergrad years...but once that was over...i never got on track...the only time i ever read now for recreation is when im on a plane or bus ride and its terrible
I've posted this before but most of my reading is on what I call stolen time.
Those moments you're taking that train to school/work, say you have a 20 minute commute. That's 40 minutes a day. That's 200 mins every 5 day week. Many courses are, what, 50 min a class w/ 2 classes per week? We are talking about 200 minutes of potential learning time that many people waste on candy crush. You could learn a whole new skill in stolen time.
Audiobooks are great as well for when you are standing or driving or just can't find a practical way to read a physical book.
The only time I really take time out specifically for reading - that's not stolen time - is when I'm on lunch on nice days and I go read outside somewhere with a lot of traffic. I take advantage of the part of me that is arrogant and narcissistic - I like to be seen. So, use that time, HONESTLY, to read and not to keep looking up to see if people are looking at me read. Ha.
Now, yes, it sucks that we have these negative elements to our personalities, but for those that we can't change, we need to ride them to our benefit. If I know I stroke my own ego when I look "smart and savvy", well, fukk it, I know I'm going to get less bored when I use that to my advantage and read at the times that it helps satisfy both. *Technically, it's the same reason why I like to read on my commutes as well.
I DEAD ASS became a MEME when this girl on the train took a sneak picture of me and shared it on her IG and my nephew happen to know her and was like, "Unc, nikka, were you on the train coming from the Bronx today?!" I was like yea, he was like yoooooo, this shyt is crazy, look at this. And sure enough, the jawn had taken a sneak picture of me reading and shared it with a caption of like, "This is my type of man, ambitious" or some variation. That shyt was fukking hilarious and crazy!

But, aside from all of that, I'm actually trying to retain the info instead of just stuntin and not really reading the shyt.

shyt, you make me think that would be another thing a 20 year old should know...use your vices to your advantage. If you have narcissistic tendencies? Try to apply it to a benefit. You have aggression issues? nikka, get into boxing and change your life. You find yourself feeling purposeless, unfulfilled and are a risk taker? nikka, save up and find a program or self create a plan to LIVE in a South American Country or Spain and force yourself to learn another language....YOU'LL COME BACK A WHOLE NEW VERSION OF YOURSELF. It'll be like social life's version of going into the Marines.
