Easier to play off of others content than to generate your own
Plus some folks just have established thread brands that people are either consciously or subconsciously loyal to. Its a very competitive market space

Forums are a team effort. Just like you got great shooters or great passers, there's posters that are better at adding on to threads than starting them.
Also, threadstarters take a huge risk of having all kinds of shade thrown on them. Once you see some

as responses or even your thread doing a complete nosedive with only like 10 viewers, you might not want to do it again especially if it's a controversial topic.
You need some kind of star power to be a TS that consistently puts up triple plat threads.

Do you have nothing to say? Are you afraid the threads will flop?
Coming up with your own thread that is unique and original is hard work, and some people just don't have it in them to make their own thread, so they just post in others.
