I figure these people coming into the cities have the chops to be here such as they can remote work but they need to read the tea leaves... if you can't afford it why live there???

Some of those small towns also don't have high-speed internet so remote work is basically impossible.

Blue cities often have a various styles of housing. I believe SF similar to NY has rent control and I’m sure a lot of retail ppl live with families

They are working in AI so its not the worst idea. If they pop, they can be millionaires. If they just make some slight advances, they can be bought out and still be minor millionaires. If they flop, they might still have enough connections and skills to cash in elsewhere. There is way more upside to what they are doing than if they say went to San Francisco and lived in those pods to open restaurants or get into acting.

If you got 3k for rent you can do much better than manhattan but these transplants DONT want to live in cheaper areas or if they do, they wanna gentrify the shyt outta it...
