The altercation began halfway through practice at the Oakland Convention Center. Sprewell, tossing lazy passes with point guard Muggsy Bogues during shooting drills, was told by Carlesimo that he needed to make crisper passes.
According to a team official who was at the practice and requested anonymity, Sprewell said he was tired of Carlesimo's ranting and threatened to kill the coach. Carlesimo retorted by saying, ''I'm right here.''
Sprewell grabbed Carlesimo by the throat as many of the Warriors watched in amazement. He forced the coach to the ground, the person said, until teammates restrained him. Sprewell was kicked out of practice and escorted out of the arena, but returned 15 minutes later while the team, unaware of his entrance, was scrimmaging.
He quickly confronted Carlesimo again, lunging at the coach and landing a glancing blow on his neck before players and assistant coaches again restrained him, witnesses said.
