I think he was sick of Star Wars and didn't want the stress of dealing with it anymore. With 4 Billy he has the freedom to relax and pursue passion projects.
he was interviewed (like many times about this) and he stated at the premiere that he is too old to work on this and had to pass the torch and he is delighted with what JJ has continued on..
