There are also times when working pro-bono is good. Helps you get your work and name out there. In my experience you should offer this on your own accord.
I've had enough people offer themselves as a practice canvas for my work.
Just be able to tell the difference between cheapskates looking for a handout and a good cause and opportunity to network.
