Some black firefighters call for CFD commissioner's firing
Alleging racism and incompetence from the department’s head, the group is calling on Mayor Rahm Emanuel to fire CFD Commissioner Jose Santiago. They say Santiago has failed to provide adequate leadership or hire and promote African Americans, even after a 2011 federal court order to do so.

City Ordered to Hire 111 Black Firefighters
A court order, finalized on Wednesday, instructs the Chicago Fire Department to add 111 black firefighters by March 2012.

The order, presented by U.S. District Court Judge Joan Gotschall, stems from a civil rights case that has made its way through trial and federal court. The lawsuit alleged that the Chicago Fire Department used discriminatory practices in its evaluation of scores for a 1995 entrance exam.

This May, a federal appeals court ruled that CFD must hire 111 African Americans who passed the exam in 1995.

The employments serve as part of the overall plan to pay at least $30 million in damages to some 6,000 plaintiffs in the case.

Would-be firefighters who have chosen other career paths and those who choose to bypass the "jobs lottery" that will identify 750 candidates to take a physical abilities test in October will receive cash awards of at least $5,000 per person.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel's administration has every incentive to get the hirings done in a hurry, as Chicago taxpayers will be liable for an additional $500,000 in back pay for every month the hiring is delayed.

Chicago taxpayers will also pay $10 million to $20 million in back pension contributions for those who land the firefighter jobs. A total cost in damages could amount to almost $50 million.

The order, expected to be approved by a federal judge Wednesday, outlines the procedure which will narrow a list of 750 candidates to send 111 people to the fire academy. The fire department will also send out notices about agility tests and background checks.


The city agreed to hire 111 bypassed African-American firefighters and borrow the $78.4 million needed to compensate nearly 6,000 African-Americans who never got that chance.

Its sad nikkas dont get it too. I literally went to a Austin , Texas Paramedic interview last week, and was the first finished with the computer test they gave us, and also had the highest score. It was only me and this Mexican dude who passed * he was cool* but I noticed on the pictures in the building it was NOTHING but whites , Hispanics and Asians. ALL white washed. I sat in the hallway with the dude and watched every single white person walk right past me , to start talking to this Mexican dude lmao. We were both there to do a oral review board. I did perfect on my interview, but according to them I failed lol. Missing out on a middle class job when I have 5 years of experience while this Mexican dude got in with NONE. the boards excuse was I didn't give enough details in my answers lmao. I would have believed them if I hadn't already heard the bullshyt before, getting passed up for radiology programs and etc for NO reason. Black people keep thinking these racist people don't affect you, and its all a coincidence and we just need to work harder lol.

Society's hatred of black folk knows no bounds.

We could be beyond qualified for a position...but get passed over most of rhe time by someone who isnt qualified simply because of their skin color. Simply because they want to have the freedom to make their jokes about black people without having to worry about a black man or black woman on the job catching wind of their bullshyt and reporting them to pr or hr and their asses getting fired and losing pay.

I remember one of my friends tried to get me work at a restaurant here in nyc. Went to the interview. Did well. Did nlt get a call back. Then again...when was the last timw you had a black server at a restaurant? When was the last time you saw black men or women working the front at a restaurant? It seems unless its fast food black folks have been phased out of the restaurant industry by hispanics in the back and whites in the front. Yep. In the restaurant industry white people can make bank and blacks are paid minimum wage or arent even hired.

Its not even about not wanting to help out black people. Its about "safe spaces".

Recently one of my friends was laid off from a restaurant job without warning. I would come in and he would fix mw free food. Great restaurant but it was your run of your mill gentrification cafe....you know the deal. Fancy shmancy foood....nothing but white people and asians and indians in then joint. NO BLACK PEOPLE AT ALL.

I was in there one day to eat. Three white women are yakking it up at the bar infront of me while i have a bacon and mozzarella panini with basil and tomatoes. One of them who looked like Peggy Hill keeps on looking back at me, the only black person in this restaurant, like this all scared like i wasnt supposed to be there enjoying food and a beer while playing around on twitter on my phone.

And thats the point. They shut us out cause they dont want to be around black people. They go to these places cause they dont want to be around black people. period.
