Though I consider it classic today. In my younger days I was complaining it was too short. Like this was dope but it's only 10 songs. How you gonna give an album with 10 songs, 5 mics. Yeah, I was young back then but that was my reaction. What was your reaction to the 5 mics in the Source. Then after hearing it did you agree?

The environment today for rap and hip hop has changed so much. If Illmatic was released today it wouldn't get noticed at all despite being vastly superior to anything by Drake, Lil' Wayne and the rest of them.

how commercial was rap back then? (around the time of the release of Illmatic)

No idea I wasn't even in elementary school back then. It should be noted that Nas tried to sign with Def Jam initially but Russel Simmons didn't think Nas was 'commercial' enough. He was right. Illmatic didn't go platinum until 10 years later.

Still deserves 5 mics. My only complaint is that people dont appreciate IWW, Stillmatic, God's Son, Lost Tapes, Hip Hop Is Dead, Untitled, Distant Relatives, and Life Is Good. I'm not trying to compare at all. I just hate how his whole career is centered around 1 album. And they (some fans not all) will always want him to make another illmatic. Nas is the only rapper I listen to that's held to a high standard like that. Its sad. Dude has a full body of work that goes almost unnoticed once illmatic is brought up. Other underrated artists with classic albums are Black Thought (The Roots) and Common.

I don't quite understand your response or what you were trying to conveyed.
It doesn't matter how long Illmatic took to go plat. Bottom line he did go plat so he wasn't right as you stated. Nobody complains about Reasonable Doubt taking years to go plat because it's a stupid argument. Was Jay not successful enough for you? Also he didn't have the vision of foreseeing NaS becoming an artist that would eventually drop 8 plat solo albums and an additional plat album in group form. Im sure if you ask Russell,he would admit that he wasn't right like you stated he was.

5 Mics, G.O.A.T. album, it's only 10 tracks but that's fine considering it doesn't have any bad or average tracks, no features and no skits and interludes like other albums have

You mad cause I gave a rational response to your illogical thinking:mjlol:
It's a hip hop board,we discuss things instead of saying stupid shyt and leaving the discussion:umad:

You're just arguing just to argue. I've grown up around belligerent hairhat hooligans so I've seen this movie before.
