It's actually the sound of your middle finger hitting the top of your ring finger. Take your ring finger out and you don't get the 'snap' sound.

That limits your range, or at very least, reduces the velocity of your middle finger hitting your outer palm. But yes, the middle finger hits the ring finger as well

Depends on which finger you snap with I get the snap even if I don't hit my palm.
Yeah, it may not need to hit your palm directly but the surrounding area will still produce the sound... :ehh:

Even if you don't fold your ring and pinky fingers you can still get the *snap* sound, just as loud too.

The loudness of the snap depends on where you position your middle finger on your thumb :ld:
