the lyrics on illmatic got less focus because it was more of an exercise in pure unadulterated rhythmic flow.
perfect example the song in question... memory lane. listen to how nas just chops the beat up. peep that flow. you could not ask for a better marriage of beat and rhymes. it is literally perfect harmony. if you can't keep up with every little thing he's sayin that's fine cause the real jewels he made easy to pick up. it's not about what he's sayin anyway, it's about the feelin you get when you hear the words.
