Print out hiragana and katakana practice sheets. You can master those in a week easy, even less with apps.

Once you got them down you can start reading/practicing kanji. Bunch of free apps that help with that but I subscribe to WaniKani first 3 levels are free.

Learning grammar is where it starts getting brutal tho...
