No thread killer here, but I did it 2 yrs ago, got a couple of paid gig...but then my new(at the time) 9 to 5 stressed me out too much and lost the love for it...but I decided to get back into it this year, mostly behind the scenes, so I been filming comedy sets and helping on sketches recently. Here's some things I've learned:
-Open mics - Don't be discouraged if the other dudes trying to do comedy there don't really laugh at your stuff; they see you as competition and are very cliquish as far as support if they came there together or already know each other.
-The way you picture yourself doing your material, probably won't be the actual way its delivered. Remember you're assuming audience re-action from a punchline..And if they don't laugh, you're look stupid expecting them to laugh.
-Be prepared to take note with what works, and keep doing it over and over till you can build around that material with successful follow up material.
-No way you're gonna be Chris Rock on your first attempts.
-Make sure you network.
-Very Important: You won't be making any money till after like the third level of doing standup.
1st- Open Mics...free shows
2nd- You'll have to bring a certain amount of people to a show to be considered to perform
3rd- You'll actually get a few dollars for a show.
