There may be a homeless person living up there. There have been numerous occasions of homeless people hiding in people's home without them knowing. I dont mean to scare you but this is a very real possibility.

Probably some kind of critter. You could even have a racc00n in there. Hire a chimney sweep to go check it out. I had something similar... a random scratching noise in the exhaust vent from my oven going out through the roof. I never found out what it was because I sold the house. It became the new owner's problem.

That's what I was thinking. Some kind of rac00n, squirrel or mouse.
