@DrBanneker its interesting because not too long ago I learned that Alabama’s chief export is lumber. Why is there a wood/pallet shortage? My family has been buying some acres and we are about to harvest the trees, what I’m hearing is maybe we should maybe start processing that wood ourselves and selling some pallets :jbhmm:

also, out here Walmart has work vans going to Florida bc of the worker shortage. I think we are facing a shortage of skilled workers though. Amazon and Walmart are grabbing up people who should be working in trades.

:salute: breh

If you are going to do lumber, the money right now is in saw mills/processing, not selling finished goods or selling raw lumber. The trees are not the shortage, the sawmill capacity is the shortage since a lot laid off workers or went down due to COVID outbreaks and there isn't enough capacity to catch up.

Maybe, but I am not sure. A skilled machinist or tradesman without drugs in their system can print money right now. Why sweat in a warehouse in that environment?

Serves Corporations right for spreading their supply chains so thin all over the globe. I hope it bankrupts a bunch of them.
:mjlol:

Made in America doesn't look so bad to the bottom line after all.

I agree, but even fully American supply chains are fukked up right now. Lumber is a US/Canadian commodity for the most part. Most plastics are sourced domestically from the Gulf region.

As far as chips and semiconductors, yeah Uncle Sam has to hold that L :yeshrug:

THERE ISN'T A RESOURCE SHORTAGE. THERE IS A PROCESSED RESOURCE SHORTAGE. THAT'S WHY REPUBLICANS ARE TRIPPING ABOUT PEOPLE GOING BACK TO WORK. RESERVES ARE DRYING UP AND THERE IS NOWHERE TO GO BUT FORWARD INTO THE shytSTORM THAT HAS BEEN CREATED.

Pretty accurate. The shyt in the ground isn't the problem, getting it processed and to market is.

Sawmills down here are offering 17 a hour out the gate. My lil homies are hitting me up about it but I have to tell them I got other irons in the fire.

I’m surprised they haven’t just started using more plastic

Makes sense, something simple as special glass bottles I could get with no problems.

Now :scust::scust::scust::scust:.

- they've all had more than enough time to minimize waste and recycle things back into the production streams, especially plastics and lumber.

It depends on the type. Also, there is so much stuff going into the recycle stream right now (think Amazon cardboard boxes) the prices are through the floor so there is enough material but capacity is still an issue. Recycling is complicated and it has capacity constraints. We serve this industry and they are buying a lot of equipment but can't keep up still.

- the chips things is just the lunacy that follows from having only two major companies supply the entire planet.

For the complex designed stuff done at TSMC and Samsung fabs you are correct, but the other issue is semiconductors at the smaller and mid range companies is a volatile market so the second the market goes south (like in 2020) they PURGE inventory and capacity since they don't want to be stuck with dead inventory. Now they are fukked since they are starting from scratch.

- good heads-up on the food/medicine increases, I'm not liking what I'm seeing there either.

DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS

And yeah, farmer CSAs, egg subscriptions, or bulk beef/chicken buys can be your friend if you have a chest freezer.

The trucking industry is in one of its worst spots ever, too. Not enough drivers because Amazon changed the whole dynamic of supply and demand in a pretty short amount of time.

Yeah and AMZ doesn't pay you shyt per mile if you are an owner operator. The problem is AMZ has so many other margin-thin contracts with the LTL carriers too it is squeezing their margins and making it harder to raise wages. It's hard finding new CDL drivers on top of that. The average age is OLD.

CAN'T GET PLASTIC. HDPE, polypro, and others are either fukked from the storm last winter or they can't get enough out of Asia.

@DrBanneker do you need a degree to work in supply chain management?
