I’m looking for a book on the history of African-American music.

The book will discuss the origins of AA music from the early beginnings such as gospel, blues to Ragtime, jazz, and finally the modern era such as hiphop, R&B.

It should be a detailed book describing the major players in each genre, the music itself, the impact it had on that era etc. If anyone has read a book like that or know of one please recommend me one. Thanks in advance

*That dept. created a Music History series called AAAMC SPEAKS last year. The first episode was about the founder of the Department.

Portia K. Maultsby is the Laura Boulton Professor Emerita of Ethnomusicology in IU’s Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology, the founding director of the AAAMC, as well as founding director of the IU Soul Revue. Her research has focused on religious and popular traditions in African American music, African cultural heritage, the music industry, and music globalization. She has published books and presented lectures on these topics around the world, and her research has been used extensively in the productions of cultural institutions, museums, and documentaries for radio and television. She recently served as lead senior scholar/consultant and storyline co-chair for the opening exhibition of the National Museum of African American Music in Nashville. Dr. Maultsby is the recipient of many awards and honors, including the President’s Medal from IU for extraordinary merit and achievement in the arts and humanities. Maultsby is an honorary member of AAAMC’s National Advisory Board.
