Main reason is that all the things that are done preceding it are not something people feel immediately. It's mostly abstractions like a process or law not being followed that doesn't have any immediate victims or the victims are marginalized or small enough for most people to not care.

Most people aren't going to disrupt their own lives to get out there and do something about some private foreign individual messing around with the treasury doing who knows what. It's not impacting them now. It's an abstract "wrong" to them. They will say it's wrong but something being wrong isn't enough to get people off their ass.

People aren't going to get upset enough at the setup of an authoritarian government, they will only care with the results of the setup at a later date and by then those in power have most likely already fortified their defense against mass outrage and it's too late without a lot bloodshed taking place.

This country is going to look totally different in a year and definitely in four. It hasn't even been a month and look what has happened.

TBF, this feeling has been the case for ages but its ten times easier, due to social media and comfort. There's a reason why back in the day folks had a reason to crash out, versus current times.

• Lack of accessibility (you either assed out or lucky to have a TV in the house...a color one at that )
• Righteous leaders (black community had a reason to crash out, just so they can fart near a white's only bathroom)
• Knowledge (from the library to the television, intelligence was essential to life)
• Society woes (Wars causing the recession, people wanting a change in the atmosphere, racial tension, etc)

Once you pacify the common man with vices from food to entertainment. Give a common man a slave job with a twang of reasonable pay. Give the common man a reason to use their phone beyond just calling a person.

You officially dumbed down the common man. And thus, allowing the masses to be manipulated by entertainment, food, drugs, etc. Better to keep humanity dumb as a brick, versus willing to fight against the machine.
