I started just doing non weighted squats, then went to just squatting using plates, then using the bar. I did that because my form was awful after knee surgery. Now I'm stronger than I was before and I can squat 550 with relative ease but I rarely do that much, I mostly rep with 350-400 depending on how I feel. I was a former athlete though so I don't recommend trying to max out. I recover with heat, sometimes cold plunge, I alternate.

Squats are my favorite lift but I can’t go heavy anymore after hurting my back doing deadlifts about 4 years ago
:mjcry:
Damn, this is what scares me. I can feel the muscles in my back hurting, but that’s normal. So I’m probably going to skip those because I really don’t want to injure myself for the long-term. My best friend did the same thing.

I don’t recommend maxing out. Personally, I usually stick to three plates and focus on adjusting volume or intensity instead.

A couple of times a year, I’ll work up to four plates as a challenge. My max is four plates and a 35. I could probably go heavier, but it takes too much out of me. Recovery also starts bleeding into that 72-hour window, which isn’t ideal.

I’m a fan of lifting heavy, but there’s a point where you’re spending more time recovering than actually training, unless you’re on PEDs.

Also, I hate re-racking a ton of plates. Three plates is manageable for squats and deadlifts, but once you go past four, it just becomes a pain in the ass….
