A bomb dropped in early Dec 2001...everyone was shocked when they heard it

How was it when it dropped?

Are you from NYC?

Anyone from NYC here when it dropped?

In Toronto I didn't realize the impact. No summer jam, hot 97.

I just loved stillmatic for what it was.

Later on I understood.

And hearing the track fukked my head up. After I learned more of the influence of Jay.

Powerful. Hip hop. Nas' beginning of a new life in his career for real.

I was in Philly

Power 99 played it every hour and got ppl's reactions in real time...no one could believe he went at Jigga's neck like that

Philly is a Rocafella city & likely was Jigga's 2nd biggest market outside of NYC metro...I just remember ppl being stunned when they heard it, complete shock that Nas undressed Jigga in such a vulgar way

It was the #1 topic for months & months every single day

I'm mad that I didn't have that kay slay mixtape on Thanksgiving that had it first

Nas recaptured the throne...Manz was relevant musically during my elementary, junior high, hs, college and adult yrs...but that Stillmatic era is my fav era of Nas

Woah! Thank you soo much for that!

This is part of why I appreciate Coli.

It's hip hop fans from different eras (I was born in 1981) who saw major events in different regions.

I always felt like at the start Toronto wasn't a big market for Jay Z.

I saw his video for Feeling it on rapcity when it dropped. But didn't think much of it.

Later on he became huge here. I think at least. I don't recall him doing a solo show in Toronto ever.

But I do remember him doing the On the run tour with Beyonce here.

. . so then your exposure to hip-hop was strictly through music-videos... radio . .. and eventually the Internet !?!?! . .. . .. not from being outside around people and hearing the shyt bumpin outta whips and heads gettin into passionate debates about lyrics and beats ?!?!!! .. . . jumpin in a dollar van and the driver blastin that latest bootleg ?!?! . . .. . i was born before you and i never did and never will consider myself a "hip hop fan" . . .. i honestly dont know what that means . . .. . "Hip-Hop" is a Culture where you are either an active participant or an outsider . . .. i think you talkin bout "rap music" . . . .
