Martin Luther King, Jr.’s inspiring encounter with a German Shepherd police dog will move you
They are two awesomely inspiring photographs – Martin Luther King, Jr. and his moving encounter with the police dog that was supposed to intimidate the Atlanta civil rights icon.

It was June 12, 1964. Dr. King had been arrested in St. Augustine, Florida after testifying before a grand jury investigating racial unrest in the city. King and the SCLC were ordered to leave the city for one month.

At 4:00 a.m., according to Associated Press photo archives, King was placed in the back seat of a police car. And with him, a German Shepherd police dog. While intended to intimidate Dr. King, the dog instead lowered his ears, softened his eyes and appears to lean on King. Many observers said it appeared the pair “became fast friends.”

With a focus on civil and human rights, Dr. King was never known for shepherding animal rights. But his love and compassion for all life likely charted a specific course for his family.

Coretta Scott King, Dr. King’s widow, would continue working with other civil rights icons, including Ralph David Abernathy, who is seen standing outside the police car in the second photo. Mrs. King began advocating for animal rights and would become a vegetarian. King’s second son, Dexter, became a vegan in the late 1980’s, according to published reports. Both were driven by the notion that animals shouldn’t be harmed.

“The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members,” Mrs. King once said.

I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality.

Pit bulls: The Black male of the dog world
August 9, 2019 Horace Holloman 3 Comments BSL, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
One day I decided to take my two pit bulls Cashmere and Julio Jones Holloman for a walk and explore a new park in Stockbridge.

Within five minutes of arrival, I was met by the park resource officer who informed me I was not in the “dog friendly” section of the park. “No big deal,” I thought. As I was leaving, the resource officer said, “What are you doing with those types of dogs in a public place anyway? Walking with those dogs is like walking with a loaded gun.”

The officer, who happened to be a Black male, said he believed pit bulls are dangerous dogs not meant for public exposure. His comments weren’t surprising.

While walking my dogs in public parks or neighborhoods, I’ve seen people immediately cross the street, scream, tell their children to run and one woman even hit Julio with a walking stick.

After regaining my composure, I told the officer he should reconsider his position on the breed because it’s hard to ignore the correlation between a pit bull and Black male in America, starting with the high incarceration rate.

According to a national survey on drug use and health, Blacks and Whites use drugs at similar rates, but the imprisonment rate of Blacks for drug charges is almost six times that of Whites.

The “incarceration” rate for pit bulls in local shelters are quite drastic. Each year, 1.2 million dogs are euthanized, approximately 40 percent are pit bulls, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Shelter advocates also say shelters are consistently overcrowded with pit bull mixes.

Black men are also negatively impacted by legislation such as “stop and frisk” laws. In New York City since 2014, Black and Latino males between the ages of 14 and 24 account for only 5 percent of the city’s population, compared with 38 percent of reported stops. Young Black and Latino males were innocent 80 percent of the time.

Comparatively, breed specific legislation (BSL), a law or ordinance that prohibits or restricts the keeping of dogs of specific breeds, negatively impacts pit bulls, pit bull-type dogs and responsible pit bull owners. The laws don’t take into account the individual dog’s history and temperament. By generalizing the behaviors of dogs that look a certain way, innocent dogs and pet owners suffer. BSL can lead to the euthanasia of innocent dogs that fit a certain look. A study from the Animal Farm Foundation showed communities with BSL do not reduce dog bites in communities or enhance public safety.

After a 10-minute conversation, the resource officer apologized for calling my dogs “loaded guns,” and said he walked away with a better understanding for the breed.

For me, owning pit bulls, which I’ve done my entire adult life, is more than just getting a dog that looks “cool.” I choose to own pit bulls because we have a special understanding– an understanding that sometimes we will be judged by others based on how we look. Despite this, we’ll work together to dispel any notion that we’re walking loaded guns–one person at a time.

So That's Why People Are Afraid Of Black Cats!

WHAT IS NATIONAL BLACK CAT DAY?
It’s National Black Cat Day on October 27th! Black cats need a little positive PR as their reputation as an omen of bad luck is well-known (and unearned, frankly). In the lead-up to Halloween, National Black Cat Day provides the chance for feline fans to show off their love for the oft-maligned, but always iconic animal.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL BLACK CAT DAY
The black cat carries a unique status among the wide batch of different cat breeds. In some locales, notably Scotland, Britain, and Japan, the presence or appearance of a black cat is indicative of imminent good fortune and prosperity. Beyond these regions, though, public favor of the black cat runs sharply southward. In much of the Western world, black cats are considered to be harbingers of misfortune and wickedness. This unfortunate association stems from an image that will be familiar to many readers, which is that of the black cat serving as a companion to potion-brewing, spell-casting witches everywhere.

This relationship would prove to hold severe consequences for owners of black cats in America in the early 17th century. As the Pilgrims established their occupancy on the east coast of the country, they maintained a strict suspicion of anything remotely tied to the perils of witchcraft. The black cat served a symbol of the supposed evils and Satanic sympathies of witches, and as a result, those found harboring black cats would receive harsh punishments; some would even be sentenced to death.

While, in general, the fears surrounding the demonic potential of witches has subsided significantly, the black cat will be left wondering why it still must suffer the consequences of a damaged collective reputation. According to several animal-advocacy groups and adoption agencies, black cats experience lower rates of adoption and higher rates of euthanization relative to other cat breeds. Because of this, National Black Cat Day stands as a fantastic opportunity to subvert these trends and demonstrate appreciation for an animal that could itself use a little luck.

Again, all Black furs/skin-tones matter. So, because the cat I posted Momma was light-skinned and Daddy was dark-skinned - you think he's not a Black cat?

No. She's Black -- just like my beautiful Dark-skinned cat in the picture.

My son's one year anniversary of his death is in a few weeks. May he continue to rest in peace.

I had him for 21 years and he was the sweetest man-cat ever.

I have never been harmed by a cat. The most they do is ignore me. I rather be ignored - than chased, mauled or bit.
