I thought Distant Relatives was classic. Life Is Good was very good but not a classic to me, had some great songs though like Daughters, Bye Baby, Reach Out, I liked The Don and Back When too. And Stay. The album was good, it just didn't hit me hugely hard cause there was some tracks where I weren't to keen on the sound, Nas did his thing on the album, very good lyrics, but a few tracks were a bit bland, I remember rating it at the time and giving it a 8.5 out of 10 and that makes sense, around 8-8.5 out of 10 I think. Probably a 4 mic album.

A lot of my people liked LIG a lot though, even people who aren't necessarily the biggest Nas fans, they really seemed to love that shyt, and thought it was his best for a while, to me Distant Relatives was better.

i don't think nas will ever please people with a 100% hit ratio on any album outside illmatic and that's because he can do jsut about any rap track well and different people fukk with different things and that's always been his problem

for example: i think just a moment, rest of my life, reason is one of the best if not best back-to-back-to-back of maybe his entire career post illmatic, but i know some of yall gon be on here like :scusthov:

i honestly dont think any album post illmatic is without its misses, but the number of great tracks, classic tracks, replayability of his good songs make him the GOAT to me. i also dont listen to him every day, but whenever i go back to his discog its :banderas:

side note and completely unrelated: blu is an incredible artist, i feel people haven't heard the whole body of work and have been unfortunately very quick to dismiss him

The single most disappointing rap artist of all time. No troll. No snark. No agenda. All my exact, honest opinion.
The reason people are disappointed is because they built in their mind, an artist that doesnt exist. In your mind you have this great lyrical album in illmatic that naS hasnt been able to duplicate. In actuality illmatic isnt at all what its hyped up to be. So people are comparing the actual naS to a mental projection of naS that isnt realistic.

In actuality IWW is easily his best work in every way. The Pac's Son album is his 2nd best but it has plenty doo doo on it. And the other albums (except illmatic) have a few good songs on them (illmatic has 1 or none).

OP, youre on the correct path.

Nas isn't that hard of an artist to Stan.....

If you don't go by his overall album quality. And therein lies the problem.

Sure, you can point out given moments on any album where he's lyrically and conceptually BRILLIANT.

Honestly, he's usually lyrically brilliant.

But his main problems are

1. He doesn't do a lot of guest appearances or mixtape work, so you really can only judge him by his album work

2. The greater majority of his album work can leave you scratching your head once you look past the "New Nas Album" hype

3. "New Nas Album" hype, which is a combination of points 1 and 2. We all hold Nas to this super high standard. I once told somebody that Nas was that super smart quiet nikka in the back of the class that everyone rags on when he makes a B+ instead of his usual A- on tests because all the teachers made him the benchmark because of ONE essay he wrote.

Compare to artists like Styles P or Joe Budden who drop like 100 songs a year (Joey used to) and NONE are sub par...... until they put out an album (sure you're incredibly smart, I can see it, but why don't you do good on your tests? Nas does good on HIS tests.)

Ghostface or Scarface who actually have put out albums that brushed IllMatic status in the eyes of their fans but not critics, and who constantly put out 4-4.5 albums even if they don't sell (sure you got an A-, but Nas wrote that essay. Why don't you be better like Nas? You can do better)

Jay-Z. who's parents are on the school board.

or this.

Dude is a Nas hater, but he's on point. People judge Nas by Illmatic's shadow.

I still love LIG. It's 4.5 to me. Thread inspired me to play it again this morning on my way to work. The fact that its been in my car for nearly 2 years now - speaks for itself. And I actually like World's an Addiction. The only song I don't rock with is SOS.

Cherry Wine - :ahh:
