I would go the software route cause these days all producers end up using software after they find out software can do much more than hardware.

Cheaper and more time efficient yes but this isn't true. There are hardware solutions for everything.

true though but you will be able to do much more in less time and to me the end result is better when i use software.
I can make much complexer arrangements in software and mix it much faster and better. MPC's are very limited.

That all depends on what you become use to. If you always make something a certain way, the alternatives won't matter to you. However each has its advantages and disadvantages.

Im in the same boat, breh. I cant afford equipment right now, so i just practice on a tablet.

I want a west coast rapper to spit on this track and shoot the video in a 64 ridin down Crenshaw

Listen to Eric Benet.mp3 by midwestbreh #np on #SoundCloud

Tell that to Dilla, or Mannie Fresh (who uses mpc's and a Roland fantom) or Pete Rock ( uses tons of hardware)

Like I said, it's about personal preference at the end of the day, McDonald's or burger king it's all burgers and fries

the one thing I notice betwen alot of hardware vs software producers (only my views)
is the level of commitment towards the game

when dude saves up spends $1000 on a keyboard or MPC or some dope hardware. hes showing a lot of commitment to his craft. Hes (more than likely) gonna learn it, focus on it, and give his all because he feels he invested a lot in to it.

with a lot of software (only) guys, I hardly ever see the same commitment. Its 90% of the time dudes that thought producing was cool and that they could give it a try. Dabble around make a few cool loops, impress their friends then usually move on to what ever is cooler next week.(like going back to becoming a rapper or some shyt)

Don't get me wrong, this is NOT the case for everyone. but it IS the case for like 80% of everyone I've ever met.

This isn't about who can make beats better either. Cuz I've heard some dope shyt and wack shyt on both.
Either one will get the job done.

another thing....unless you got controllers, software producing is boring as fukk. how can you feel the vibe clicking on a piano roll in fruity loops?

That's what I'm always saying, it's an investment one way or another. Either you're investing time or money, sometimes both. The essence of being a producer is having a library whether it's records,cd or tapes, you can walk in to someone's crib who does it and get that vibe. Having a huge sound library and plugins....its not exactly the same.

You might need one fishing pole if you go fishing once or twice a year with someone and you wouldn't consider it a hobby or call yourself a Fisher or fisherman. When you get a tackle box, lures, rods and such then you start to spend the time and develop your craft you can begin to associate within the group. It's definitely not about spending or having, don't judge a man how he spends his money, judge him how he spends his time.

You can spend $1000 bucks on gear or software and never use it or download for free or obtain some secondhand gear and spend 1000 hours.

I know a couple of cats who are all digital, they don't have crates of records, boxes of cds or tapes and they are just as dope as my boy who has 4 bookshelves full of records. At the end of the day we can all talk bout production methods, techniques, samples, breaks etc

That's the best way to do it bro. Everyone started at some point. There is no wrong way. If this is the road you want to travel keep moving forward. As you learn just remember that their is no such thing as a stupid question. We've all had them at some point. All the best.

When I was using reason and such back in the day i remembered my boy had a keyboard from when he was like 11. We went to his mom's crib and dug it out of the basement, this fukk nikka made me pay $60 for it but I did it cause it had midi ports. I started using it as a midi for my pc (reason) and my mpc's had midi on them so it was a come up. A cheap cascio..nothing special but it held me down
Word for word exactly what I did :russ:
