Is Asus supposed to be best and/or Most Popular router brand?

Asus is great for me. It's around the top of the heap overall, but Netgear/Belkin and a few others are more popular due to selling a wide range of products at different price points.

I bought an Asus and the shyt died on me :francis:

I have a TP Link N600 now...still holding on after a year.

Best router I ever had though as far as signal strength was this Buffalo router with DDWRT on it. Lasted 7 months before it had problems and the firmware update only made it worse :mjcry:

:dwillhuh: You not gonna give me a model number or something?

EDIT:
Is this what you talking about?:
Xiaomi Mi WiFi Mini Router

Sorry I am mobile. Yeah that's it as long as it's not the youth variant. Comes with 16MB ROM for something like OpenWRT of you're into that and a hefty 128MB RAM for your connections.

I'm very much into third party firmware and this has beast specs at a low price for whatever will support it.

EDIT: Let me add that naturally you're looking for a router with a high throughput and this naturally seems to fit the bill with ac on board alongside the other bands. I don't own it personally but Xiaomi tends to have solid products with other stuff I have of theirs.

Also bear in mind the setup may be in Chinese.

For me, if I were buying another one, I'd look for
  • Wireless AC support
  • Gigabit ports (should be almost standard)
  • Most importantly, DDWRT (and to a lesser extent Tomato) compatibility.

I have the ASUS RT-AC87U router and it's pretty dope. It's pretty much no maintenance.
Can you explain the importance of this?

Third party firmware that enhances the operation of your router.

I used to prop up Tomato hardcore until better hardware came our and it was hard to port. The QOS at the time was unmatched (which I primarily used 3rd party firmware for). DDWRT is always buggy and was my first entrance into the game. Can't knock on it for that reason.

Times have changed now and OpenWRT is the best IMO. Does everything well and the SQM scripts basically ensure I get good local network performance under ant circumstance. Its totally engineer made so not as user friendly but worth the time spent on learning.

Essentially what @Rice N Beans said. You get much more bang for your buck.

I do additional things on my router that none of the stock firmwares provide so I have to go third party. I have different experiences than he does as far as the third party firmwares go. Tomato never works as well for me and OpenWRT isn't as widely available. I usually research based on DDWRT support so I haven't had any buggy firmware issues. Either way, they are typically a step up from the original firmware on almost any router.

Besides ASUS, what are some other dependable wireless Router brands?

Netgear is pretty good from what I've used. I've heard their top tier offerings (such as Nighthawk) are great. I've used Linksys too without much of a problem.
