i worked in food service from HS till a bit after college.
one thing i will say is that it kept me and my folks fed and i mean that literally.

in HS it was whatever, just learning the ropes.
washing dishes, serving tables, garbage, etc...

then when i was in college it became something different.
i knew everyone because i took everyone's order, cooked it and served it to them.
also, i could use it as social currency. you need food but don't got money? cool...here you go.
later down the line i lost my student ID...gonna cost me $50 to replace it?
nah...i know the AV man who make the ID's. i put food in his belly so i'm getting a free replacement plus a random one that you can't trace.

damn, i can't make rent this month.
lemme grab this 5 pound bag of veggie burgers for my vegan roommate so he knows i'm not a dikk.

yo, food service is some fukkery but you will literally eat.
