Personally, I like Joey Bada$$ more for his lyrics than his sound.

Even with that, it ain't his fault he sound so Ill over soulful 90s beats and I think that's what people are not understanding, Red Cafe wouldn't get love for the same thing cuz the nikka would sound trash over those type beats :yeshrug:

Do u walk around dressed like the Fu-Schnickens and huddle around garbage pails full of burning trash too

Do ALL of your beats sound like some 90s shyt

Cmon brae

If he really wanted to pay homage to the 90s he would do something original like artists in the 90s did. nikkas adapted all kinds of crazy narratives/identities during this era... dogs, kung fu masters, Colombian drug lords, Iranian ayatollahs, Blaxploitation antagonists... and likewise there was a correspondent wide range of sound. So if his whole thing is to emulate the 90s hes not doing a good job. Hes emulating a very small piece of it and not really doing his music or the artform any favors. Like Ghost said in 95

:dead:

I fukks with Bada$$ but this had me:russ:

Look at what you just said- the producer is carrying them. Without hot beats, them guys are shyt.

From a lyrical point of view, none of those guys can fukk with Joey Bada$$....

they not tryin to be lyrical tho.....THEY THE MUTHAFUKKIN COKE BOYS!!!

i can appreciate ignorant nonsense as much as the next next dude but lets compare like for like. The dude said Coke boys- them guys are rappers. To say rappers who ain't trying to rap are better than a rapper who is trying to rap and perfect his craft is fukking ridiculous. Plus the reason stated was the producer (who aint even really in the group) is carrying them- if they're being carried by the beats, it means they're garbage.

I probably listen to more 2 Chainz than Kendrick but never in a million years am I gonna say he's better. Give a man some props for respecting the genre and actually trying to be good at it....

The level of "era homage" dude is doing less like paying homage and more like adapting an identity because he can't rock w/his own

Your sound has nothing to do with your identity.

Only in Hip Hop are we try'na box people in to categories. It's music, he's gravitated to what he enjoys making. That's his freedom as an artist. That doesn't make him dishonest. He's not required to "sound like 2012". That's the point of the art, to make what inspires you. And he's said that he's been influenced by that era.

That's his choice. I wouldn't say that Fab is stuck in 2001 because he's doing another part to "The Soul Tape". MC's should make the music that will inspire them, and not have to worry about people try'na box them in as being a certain type of artist.

C'mon son. If you from NY appreciate that the lil dude is bringing some shine to the borough instead of trying to knock him down. Like I said, he just dropped his first mixtape and already you and other nikkas on here are ready to sum up his entire career.

Your post doesnt change my opinion, youre a hater. Out of everyone, you seem to be the most vocal, granted this is your thread but the level of where you take it is on some bitter label rep or bum rapper who cant get on.

But I gotta remember that youre the online NY governing officer, who checks every rapper not doing your city right:childplease:

Let the young dude live and build his foundation and growth, whether it be through traditional 90's hiphop or more progressive (no pun) hiphop music.
We cant even call a spade a spade anymore. You "any nikka who disagrees with me is a hater" ass nikkas are killing hip hop. You cant be in a competitive sport like hip hop and not be able to deal w/negative opinions

Joeys not bad but completely biting the 90s is not the wave

Dude can do what he wants, what confuses me is why I cant have an opinion on it

Completely biting the 90s is a wack move IMO. Its easy, its low hanging fruit. Its much much much harder to actually come up with a sound and style that draws on influences but is still fresh and original. Theres nothing fresh/original about dude's sound. Thats just my opinion tho. Me having an opinion has no bearing on your opinion or what dude should do.

Joey's lyrics don't contain the 90s subject matter, this dude gets unfairly hated on SMH.
