this study suggests it had downward pressure on wages and increased inequality.

edit: don't get me wrong either, I'm not suggesting we go back to 1950 where women were the homemakers. And you could probably find a study that suggests the opposite...this is economics after all.
So here's a chart I came across whose source is based on the the census date from 1955-2010
http://www.census.gov/hhes/www/income/data/historical/people/2010/P36AR_2010.xls
It appears to me that "something" happened in the early 70's that stagnated wages, as women had already been working for several decades at this point I'm going to lean towards the the conclusion draw in your link as being not so clear....

I think the it does or rather DID have downward pressure at the time simply based on supply and demand, however; the effect doesn't speak to being able to survive off of one income. Quite to the contrary the logical conclusion would suggest that more money would posit the average family to be in a state of abundance.

That being said, I guess one might argue that with an increase in household income the same supply and demand prompted an increase in prices :manny:
Gotta love economics, people pretend to know this shyt but at best it's "magic"...

well the number of women working in 1970 has gone from 30 million to now 70 million+ in 2010. Has that stagnated wages? I don't know. There are probably several factors.

@theworldismine13 :patrice:

this is a direct quote from this article and its interesting he doesnt source this becuase its pretty much a lie

There's mixed evidence on the effect on low-skill workers, but even if there are small losses, those are better managed through transfer programs than by closing the border.

its lie because the evidence isnt mixed, just about every immigration study done shows that immigration hurts low skilled native workers

framing the issue as stealing jobs is just playing off some south park episode more than its going off what immigration critics are actually saying, the real issue is whether you are willing to sacrifice low skilled workers for the benefits of increased immigration and are you going to ignore that the benefits of immgration go to upper class which in turn increase inequality

immigration enlarges the economy and helps most workers but it also hurts low skilled worker and increases inequality in society, capish? in other words there is no free lunch and liberals like ezra klein should stop suggesting that there is a free lunch, lets be reality, the real reason people like ezra klein write articles like this is because they think increasing immigration will bring in a lot of brown people which will in turn create a permanent liberal majority, thats about it

if open border is so great for economies then obviously the first thing we should do is make sure that poorer countries have open borders, since its so great

the second thing to note is what he says about english being an advantage, the problem is that ezra klein is the same type of person that will write an essay about people decrying pressing 1 for english and he will write an essay promotin bilingual ballots, in other words you cant say english is an advantage then promote policies that place other languages as equal to english, its another attempt at a free lunch

and additionally the issue of immigration isnt just about jobs, its about culture, language, assimilation and the rule of law

Read the article the day it posted didn't feel the need to comment but yea immigrants aren't taking anybody's jobs our economy is fukked for plenty of other reason and illegal immigration is on the bottom of that list . In my personal and professional life I have never met a person in real life that has told me that the reason the they couldn't find job or better yet the reason they lost a job was due to illegal immigration . The myth about illegal immigrants taking "low end" jobs simply is not true , yes there are certain sectors such as farming where there are a high number of illegal workers but the people that need to be blamed are the farmers & farming corporations hiring them not the workers. Article was a good, but a fluff piece at best, more than anything only thing he got 100% right imo is when he said that immigrants don't compete with skilled workers, nothing makes me cringe more when this immigration topic pop's up every few months and you here on TV some "well" educated late 20's early 30 yr American born person arguing how immigration hurts the "middle class" , STFU if your college educated , american born, united states citizen and you can't find any employment something else is going on in your life.

My stance on the issue remains the same LET THEM ALL IN, shyt i wish we shared a border with India & China :blessed:

like i said its not a myth, every single immigration study shows that immigration hurts the wages of low skilled low educated workers, it also shows that it helps the higher skilled and it helps the economy

in other words immigration expands the economy and it increases inequality

in other words there is no free lunch

in other words you cant write an essay supporting open borders and then a couple of days later write an essay bemoaning income inequality

but i believe in science so we should have an experiment, countries like dominican republic, cuba, venezuela and mexico should open up their borders and lets see what happens

Couldn't you argue dual income families has now bid up the prices of living? when before a family could get by on a single income?

I said the same thing too a while ago

and another FYI, for those jumping on the open borders bandwagon, yall do realize that open borders is a libertarian/free trade argument, the other part of the open borders argument is that the minimum wage should be eliminated and also trade barriers should be eliminated

basically their point is that they want more NAFTA type agreements but they want also to add free labor on top of free movement of goods......which i actually agree with

but i think a lot of yall including ezra klein are just jumping on the open borders issue as a way to bring in hordes of brown people that will vote democratic and turn america into a multicultural paradise, but unless you are also for eliminating the minimum wage, reducing th epower of unions and world wide free trade agreements, you shouldn't be careful about advocating open borders

well, what happens when these illegal immigrants no longer are going for these low-paying jobs? Instead, are thrusted into the middle class society and become TRUE natives. Then what? Because it's happening as we speak. A lot of Mexican americans are going to college breh. They not out in the fields like their parents and grandparents were....and that's ONLY mexicans

That's the American dream

Teach your kids to get a education, find a career, job or calling they love and they will be fine.
