Black, African American....it's all the same to me.
Some Black folks are uncomfortable being tied to Africa.
I'm not.
I'll eat jambalaya and jollof rice just the same. BBQ brisket or beef suya? Give me both. Maybe if you're "Black" but burn easily in the sun, I could see why you're uncomfortable embracing your Africanness.
Black-American usually makes the most sense though. It explains where your ancestors landed and it identifies your race. "Black" can refer to anyone in the diaspora...that's fine too.
People from Africa don't call themselves "African American" because they obviously know which ethnic group and which country they came from.
"White" is not a race. It's a political identity that changes as needed to keep whites on top. Black has been the same since 1619.
