I think it's probably a combination of the maybe even subconscious/overt biases of some of the writers, related directly to the way black people have long been portrayed in TV and film, and the clumsiness of the those kinds of late 90's cliches. There's no question about that. But, Bookem Woodbine's character is written with some nuance, he just plays it a little hammy. Because it's Bookem Woodbine.

The rapper getting shot in 2006 was an one those attempt to kind of capitalize and satirize 50 Cent and the state of rap culture at the time, but it doesn't really work, or it's choppy at best,

but using the example of not one of them is a "good person", you can use that for any race/gender on the whole show. Which is about criminality, but also about just the messiness of human existence. The congressman was also shown as a pragmatic, but conflicted character, again the kind of messiness of life in politics, but life in general. He wasn't meant to be or written as a scumbabg at all.

Of course. It would not be realistic if they were not.

They were deplorable humans. Murderers. Cheaters. Scammers. Liars. Rapists. Felons. Drug Dealers.

We really think they would be all of that but not be racists:russ:

^This. Repped. I'm rewatching that shyt right now.

Expect a bunch of piece of shyt human beings to draw the line at skin color, coli brehs. :mjlol:

Oh Pee dumbass sounds like the black YTers that make videos on some " :damn: I went to Italy/Eastern Europe/anywhere that the majority of folks ain't black like me and experienced racism firsthand! :mjcry:" shyt.

The fukk did you expect? :stopitslime:

One of the leads in the movie was Black and a great well developed character.

i was a huge fan of the sopranos, as i’m sure many of you were and still are. it was the gangster angle, stories of the mob being the chinese food of television and film, along with this series’ darkly comic take on the genre.

but in an era of heightened racial awareness, you tend to inspect the media you consume more closely - at least, i do. going over each season, i’m hard pressed to find a single positive depiction of a black person.

the gangster rapper who tried to extort hess.

the crooked reverend who profited off the anger of his followers.

the self absorbed tragic mulatto who played meadow (and probably messed with her roommate).

the pigheaded cop who had a chip on his shoulder and was disliked by everyone.

the community activist who conspired to speed up gentrification in black neighborhoods.

the bumbling hitmen who botched the hit on tony.

the gangster rapper who asked bobby to shoot him in the ass.

the bed wench who laid down with a geriatric jew.

the crackheads squatting in the houses.

the young kids hired to scare away said crackheads.

and, yeah, i guess you had one or two who weren’t bad in any obvious regard: the caretaker who looked after olivia; the father and daughter who invited jackie into their apartment when he was on the run.

they were barely on the screen, though. hell, olivia implied the caretaker was a thief; even if she was lying, the implication was enough to color your impression of the character.

just something to think about.

:unimpressed:
That's in all mafia movies
"I knew they would spend the money in their big Cadillacs"- Sonny Coreleone

"Race mixing? You condone that kind of stuff?"- Tommy after his girlfriend compliments how talented Sammy Davis Jr is

"You know who gets caught, Karen? N1gg3r stick men..sleeping at the wheel" - Henry Hill, then sure enough they kill Stacks to hammer home that point

Jackie Jr was reportedly killed by u known black thugs and they made Tony smiled and stared Meadow down as she heard this goofy lie

The Bronx Tale love story....

It is blatantly racist against Black people.

I watched that series. And Tarantino movies. I cringed at those moments but I tried to rationalize it.

Django Unchained broke me. I recognized that QT was just trolling at that point.

Oh. You criticize me for using the N word? I will write a movie that uses it every 90 seconds.

Lord of the Rings pissed me off in a slightly different direction. Black people don't even exist. Or are represented by Orcs.

Now. If I see any little thing that rubs me wrong I just shut the series/movie off right away.
The thing is...we are talking about murderers, extortionists, black mailers, drug dealers, cons..that think they are actual business men and are actually following the example of Lucky Luciano himself. Of course they are racist..they don't like anyone in that world who isn't all Italian...

I feel like most of you aren't reading the OP.

He's not saying he just now realized the characters are racist....he's saying he thinks the depiction of black folks on the show was racist.

Fred.
The depiction of the black folks were one dimensional and no substance except the cop who gave Tony the ticket. But the premise of the show isn't to show black representation of any sort..its about a twisted soul who is more committed to his crime life than his own family..which is the whole point of la cosa nostra.

You have a point, but they depicted everyone that way. You think they depicted Italians in a good light?
True, but didn't they even have a story or episode about Italian heritage that addressed that "not all Italians are like this and they hate how they're portrayed in the media", but black people didn't get anything of the sort and just for constantly shyt on :francis:

It's nothing less than what I'd expect, but I'm just sayin.
